Two 17th/18th century books. The first "Posthumous Works in Prose and Verse Written in the Time of the Civil Wars And Reign of K Charles II" by Mr. Samuel Butler, published in London, 1715 - front cover loose from spine, spine with wear and losses, slight tear near base of 1st page, all pages with darkening along edges, otherwise good condition - this is the largest of the 2 measuring 3 1/8" x 5 1/4"; and the second, a 17th century book written in Latin with hand written pen and ink inscription written on blank page attributing works to Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso - a Roman poet who lived during the reign of Augustus.) - original leather binding with wear and crazing, browning to edges of pages, otherwise complete and in good condition considering its age. Provenance: From the Thomas Rockwell collection. Tom was the son of the famous American illustrator, Norman Rockwell, and was a book collector and book seller residing in both Stockbridge Massachusetts, where he opened a book and print store with his brother Peter, and Lagrangeville NY.
