Autographed book signed by author C.S. Mongrieff with a poetic inscription under his signature, possibly by Kipling. Book titled "Widsith Beowulf Finnsburgh - Waldere - Deor - Done into common English after the old manner" by Charles Scott Mongrieff, and published in London by Chapman & Hall, Ltd. 1921. With partially legible pen and ink inscription signed "Stanley Mercer from Charles Scott Mongrieff August - 1921" above another inscription marked "'When you've done that (?), you'll be a wolf, my son. Kipling" - probably after Kipling's poem titled "If" that ends with the words "you’ll be a Man, my son!" - note the Kipling signature has not been authenticated and this could have been written as an attribution to poem rather than by him - online signatures are similar to this but cannot be guaranteed. The covers and spine of the book with fading around the edges, and some foxing along the page edges, but overall good condition. Provenance: From the Thomas Rockwell collection. Tom was the son of the famous American illustrator, Norman Rockwell, and was a book collector and book seller residing in both Stockbridge Massachusetts, where he opened a book and print store with his brother Peter, and Lagrangeville NY.
