There are original furnishings here from the era’s top innovators. Many of these pieces are in the permanent collections of Modern art museums. Considering that these designs, and the Mid-Century Design aesthetic, is still highly in demand, and that they still look fresh and "Modern," is a testament to the designers who developed them, over 75 years ago! In fact, these furnishings are so ubiquitous, and so often copied in today's popular home decor — that their origins are taken for granted, and their designer's names all but forgotten.
How do we define what is Modern? To us, Modern refers to a continuation of ideas that came from the Bauhaus in Germany--one hundred years ago(!) that still holds up today! The Bauhaus concept of “form follows function” changed how people interact in their environment. Coincidentally, the woman who owned these furnishings emigrated from Germany. She was also an artist and a well-known garden designer, (to the “the “Stars....) Her sensibility and style was perfectly aligned with Bauhaus teachings...and her taste was FLAWLESS.

THIS ESTATE SALE IS A LSO A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE THE INTERIOR OF THIS UNIQUE, HAND-BUILT HOUSE BY A LEADING AMERICAN ARTIST OF THE EARLY 20th CENTURY, HENRY VARNUM POOR. We promise--It's worth the trip! This historically- and architecturally-significant home was designed and built (by hand) by HENRY VARNUM POOR, one of the "Top 10 of American Artists" of his time—and a real Renaissance man. The house's style is a marriage of Bauhaus and Arts and Crafts styles, and was built in 1941 for Milton Caniff, the popular cartoonist. Henry built several homes in the area for his celebrity friends in New City, between the Wars. Together, they formed a loose collective known as the South Mountain Road Artist Colony, located at the foot of High Tor Mountain.
Hope to see you there. (How can you resist?)
