Wounaan Basket by the Embera Tribe in Panama, c. 1950s, woven with Chunga fibers. The muted colors indicates this is likely an older tribal piece that would have had a matching lid, as more recent ones feature colorful animal designs for the tourist trade. The Embera people rely on income from the export of their baskets, primarily known for their earlier geometric designs and fine handiwork, as the tribe still maintains a primitive existence deep in the Panamanian rainforest.
