A well executed etching from an oil on canvas portrait of Alexandre Dumas fils., the son of Alexandre Dumas (author of the Count of Monte Cristo & the 3 Musketeers). This portrait of A. Dumas, fils was completed by the French classical painter and sculptor (Jean-Louis) Ernest Meissonier 1815-1891. Meissonier was perhaps best known for his paintings of Napoleon, his armies and other military themes. Meissonier enjoyed great success in his lifetime and was acclaimed for his mastery of fine detail and commanded enormous prices for his artwork. This etching was completed in 1879 two years after the oil painting and appears to be signed by the sculptor A. Mongin in pencil. It was first exhibited in the Gazette des Beaux Art in 1879. A. Dumas fils was himself an accomplished writer and author. In 1848 he published "the Lady of the Camelias" which was turned into an opera, "La Traviata" by Verdi in 1853. The last photo is typical Meissonier portrait of Napoleon for which he was most famous. It is not included in the sale.
