Vintage First National 1900s Crate With Latch And Removable Top In Old Paint, 28"X19" X 14"

This is a great country store item from another era. I thought it was for eggs but might be too heavy so at this point only can guess what it might be for but it does have a hasp and is lockable. What would be important enough in a vintage first national store that would call for a lockable wood box or crate with a removable lid???
