Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. United States Great War poster designed by the artist Illian, George and published by The W. F. Powers Company, Litho, New York, 1917.

Poster is in support the United States Food Administration. The US Food Administration was run by Herbert Hoover and was charged with decreasing domestic consumption of food and increasing supply to Europe while keeping distribution and prices steady. Hoover refused a salary and the US Food Administration became incredibly powerful, impacting nearly every American through its setting of prices, particularly wheat. Hoover's slogan was "Food Will Win the War."

This poster features a quote from General Pershing (commander of the American Expeditionary Force in Europe) "We must not only feed our soldiers at the front but the millions of women & children behind our lines. WASTE NOTHING" Hoover's combination of coercion and persuasion resulted in America tripling its exports of food to Europe. Original WWI poster, not a copy. Measures approximately 29" x 21".
