An adorable box decorated with flowers and filled with vintage photographs. Many of the photos are tintypes, some of which include the names of studios in Milwaukee.
Tintype photography, also known as ferrotype, was a popular photographic process in the 19th century. It involves creating a direct positive image on a thin sheet of metal coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. Tintypes were durable and relatively inexpensive, making them a popular choice for portraiture, especially during the American Civil War. The process was later replaced by more advanced techniques, but tintypes remain an important part of photographic history.
