Here is a chance to own something truly rare and unusual. The modern Franc, based on the decimal system, became the national currency in 1795, set by the French Revolutionary Committee. In 1802, Napoleon Bonaparte determined the size of coin and amount of gold when he was elected First Consul. The first 20 Franc coins were called "Napoleons", and the 40 Franc coins were referred to as "double Napoleons" because they contained twice the gold. The first 40 Franc coins had "Premier Consul" on them, but as we know, Napoleon had other plans and soon appointed himself Emperor and subsequently changed the title on the coinage. So this coin is one of the first 40 Franc coins made. It has been altered into a pendant with additional gold by the jeweler-owner, likely before WWI. Read below for more information on the owner.
