Cresol, or coal tar (a by product of turning coal into gas) was once used in various pharmaceutical products such as shampoos, ointments and analgesics. This particular device marketed the open flame heated cresol fumes as a cure to numerous respiratory diseases including whooping cough, pneumonia and even diphtheria. The American Medical Association debunked the use of these vaporizers by 1909 but they continued to be used and sold as late as the 1950's.

Purchased in Winchester, Massachusetts, an antique bottle of Neatsfoot oil from the local Aberjona Pharmacy, which was used In the 18th century as a topical application for dry skin conditions.
