This striking crocodile bench from the Iatmul culture of Papua New Guinea was carved from a single piece of tropical hardwood, with textured details mimicking the crocodile's scales and teeth and accented with white and orange-tan painted trim. This piece was acquired by Jack Baxter in a remote village along the Blackwater River, a tributary of the Sepik River, where crocodiles are a common sight. Part of the Baxter Marlow Collection, it was acquired during the 1980s or 1990s.
