Title: Custom Beaded Necklace
Culture: Samburu
Region:Umoja Village, Samburu County, Kenya
date Acquired: 2013
Description: This custom beaded necklace, purchased in Umoja Uaso—the only all-female matriarchal village in Kenya. Umoja was founded in 1990 by Rebecca Lolosoli as a refuge for women escaping violence, FGM, and forced marriages. Lolosoli created the village after being assaulted for advocating against harmful practices affecting women. Meaning "unity" in Swahili, Umoja provides a safe space for women and their children, supporting the community through the sale of honey and handmade beadwork like this necklace, which serves as both a cultural symbol and source of income for the village.
