Räuchermänner (Smoking Man) II
Culture: German
Region: Germany
Date Acquired: 1990s
Dimensions:
Description: This Räuchermann, or "Smoking Man," is a traditional German incense smoker, marked "Made in German Democratic Republic" with a handwritten note reading "Alexandria VA 1980." The figure, which comes with a pack of incense, is designed to burn cone incense (Räucherkerzchen) inside the hollowed wood. When the cone burns, smoke escapes from the figure’s pipe. Introduced in the 19th century, Räuchermänner are a beloved part of Ore Mountain Christmas traditions, often displayed alongside Schwibbögen (candle arches) and other festive decorations. Donated by Roger Wolfe.
