This Mei mask from the Baxter Marlow Collection is crafted from raw wood and features cowry eyes, with one missing. Mei masks are integral to Iatmul ceremonial dress, attached to conical structures made of plaited fibers that cover the dancer's head and shoulders. Mei masks represent ancestral figures and are used in rituals to impress initiates and intimidate enemies. Acquired between 1982 and 1999.
