This hand-carved gable mask from the Baxter Marlow Collection represents traditional Iatmul artistry. Made from wood, it was used in ceremonial contexts, often placed on the façade of men’s houses along the Sepik River. The mask features intricate carvings and reflects the cultural significance of the Iatmul people, who historically used such masks in rituals and as symbols of their ancestral heritage. Acquired in the 1980s or 1990s.
