Israeli artist Yohanan Simon created biomorphic abstract and figurative paintings and worked in graphic and book design. Born in Germany, Simon trained with Max Beckmann at the Städelschule and Fauvist André Derain in Toulon, France, as well as at the École des Beaux-Arts. While working at Vogue in the 1930s in New York, he was inspired by Diego Rivera’s revolutionary murals. In 1936, Simon moved to Kibbutz Gan Shmuel, then part of Mandatory Palestine, where he painted Social Realist works and created public art, posters, and illustrations inspired by the kibbutz movement’s utopian socialist ideals. The canvas At the Kibbutz (1948), sold for $128,500 at auction in 2012, is an example of this subdued style. Following Simon’s travels to South America in the 1950s and ’60s, his late works became more abstract and wildly colorful. The artist exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1948 and 1958 and in the 1953 São Paulo Bienal. In 2001, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art presented a solo exhibition, “Yohanan Simon: Dual Portrait.” (Artsy)
