Chester Coleman Hayes (1867-1947) was born in Canandaigua NY, to a prominent American family. He emigrated to France to study under Jean-Joseph Benjamin Constant and Jules Fefevbre (1880-1892), as well as Merdon in Paris. Chester
C. Hayes was known for his landscapes, many of the Normandy area. His portraits brought him fame and recognition in Europe and the US. He had a housekeeper, Madame Berriott, whom he painted several times, in traditional Normandy dress. One version is in the collection of the Museum of Touquet-Paris-Plage, the other, more finished painting is part of the family collection. Chester C. Hayes' works were exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1899, and the Paris Academy of Fine Arts in 1912 and 1930. He created a large mural for a municipal building in Paris; a watercolor study of it remains in the family. After WWII, Chester C. Hayes moved back to the US, and resided in La Jolla, CA. During his time in the US, he painted portraits of many prominent women and men, many of which are in the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Columbus Museum of Art, and the art collections at Yale University.
