A completely amazing piece of wood with a painting of a house on a lake.

A generous Auction Ninja bidder sent me some info on this piece!
This is most likely not a piece of wood, but instead a piece of fungus that grows on trees. The art is mostly from Maine and Minnesota and is quite an ordeal to create. Maine pieces tend to be painted and Minnesota tends to be etched. First they have to wait for the fungus to grow to a manageable size, I have several pieces from 3-8" long. Then drying the fungus in order to paint it is a process & I don't know if they paint it under a magnifying glass or if they have really good eyes, but the pictures are usually of lake scenes, maybe a cabin, a deer, pine trees, and has Maine/Minnesota/lake characteristics.
When you know the true detail of the art, it makes it that much more desirable.
It is actually called a 'tree conk' and there is so much intricate and beautiful art and technique into creating these pieces.
