Pablo Picasso ( 1881 - 1973 ) was a Spanish born painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, poet and playwright who spent most of his life in France. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential artists of The Twentieth Century. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the most well known figures in Twentieth Century Art.
In 1946 Picasso visited the small coastal town Vallauris France, known for its pottery, where he bceame enamored with the ceramics being produced by Atelier Madoura, owned by Suzanne and Georges Ramie. Invited by the Ramies to produce his own ceramics, this collaboration ushered in one of the most prolific periods of his career spanning more than 20 years. Here he created a breathtaking collection of original ceramic works.
In an era when only the wealthy could afford his paintings and sculptures, Picasso welcomed the notion that his pottery and ceramics could be owned by everyday people in the Post-War world. He loved the idea that these ceramic works were both aesthetically pleasing and functional, frequently gifting these pieces to friends and family.
He was always experimenting with new ways to express himself artistically. More than anything, Picasso was eager to test the creative potential of this new medium. His involvement with ceramics was both profound and personal, becoming one of the most significant parts of his oeuvre. The great invention and originality of this large body of work established his importance in the development of 20th Century Art Pottery.
