Katie Byrns spent three decades buying jewelry with intentions to share it with her 100's of friends and family. She ran the cosmetic, post office and gift departments at a large Rexall store for 40 years. Locally she shopped almost exclusively at Nordstrom, Maier & Frank and Fredrick & Nelson three of the NW's icon department stores. She also took a number of trips to Thailand, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Haiti, Mexico and at her second home in Hawaii. Much of this jewelry couldn't even be produced today due the extensive hours to produce them by hand. Regardless of origins most come in original packaging with price tags still in place. When you see $4 price tags keep in mind those are from 45 to 65 year old prices. The identical piece with a $4 tag could fetch $40 today. A fantastic opportunity to acquire exceptionally well made jewelry for a song.
When Katie passed in 2000, her house was packed with stuff. She would have needed another 500 friends to make a gifting dent. Her daughter Roylene was a storage fanatic. She generally had less interest in jewelry and collectibles but prided herself in safely storing everything entrusted to her. She was given many dolls between 1935 and 1940. She would have enjoyed them for a short time than wrapped them and stored the dollsin a couple Lane hope chests. She possessed everything from Katie 90 years of stuff along with her own 90 years of hoarding. One exception was with my assistance when we sold over two hundred NIB vintage perfume and cosmetics from the 1960's and 70's. When she passed the combined estates were passed to me as custodian. The 18 totes including 6 of just jewelry pieces have sat in my house since early 2023 until now as I begin to liquidate. Along with the extensive jewelry the inventory includes vintage Royal Daulton Tobey mugs, lots of Franciscan dinner ware, blenko glassware, old bottles, knick knacks, old photographs and quality cookware.
