Although gifted to me years ago I still needed to ask permission to part with this gem. We are transitioning to a motor home life style so displaying art isn’t viable thing. This is the original and with it the rights to market it should you decided. Which frankly I am regretting not doing it a bit. A greeting card company’s dream of a unique slant on the Christmas card. These piece can be hung anywhere any time of year. The winner with have the admiration of anyone who views it.
Mike Krise is a unique gentlemen who would never shy away from his Native American tribal roots, A member of the Squaxin tribe which combined a number of smaller groups under the Squaxin grouping. Mike claims to be one of the last of his band who lived along the shore of what is now Shelton waterfront area. In the 1850's I believe a number of different tribes were joined together, given some blankets ,a couple gold coins a month and placed on Squaxin Island in south Puget Sound. The island wasn't a bargain to start a community, consisting of dense brush, a few trees and worse no water supply. Of the few hundred who initially went to live on the island a short time later only a dozen remained and actually survived.
Close friends, It never crosses my mind we are from two different races except when we talk about him sharing some of his traditions, showing me locations or doing activities with me. As a non tribal member most aren't allowed to be enjoyed.
The work brings out the lighter side of Mike. On the reservation and actually throughout the community Mike is addressed as Uncle Mike. His relaxed friendly demeanor attributes to the nickname along with it doesn't matter where he goes everyone knows him like a part of the family.
