This auction consists of three very different people in terms of collecting. My grandmother loved to shop and give give give. I made a decent living for the past 30+ years locating, acquiring and reselling antiques, collectibles, and the unusual. I have bought 100's of storage lockers before it was fashionable and basically the entire lives of some predominate or historical figures. One who comes to mind is Orre Nobles. I heard they are to make a movie about him. He came from Montana and on a school teacher wage at the local school he bought a chunk of hood canal waterfront land including where Bill Gates home sits, the land under the Alderbrook Inn and up the hill to the present country club. All the while he became a merchant marine and survived typhoons and 3 ships that sunk. He also worked as the head designer for the Feta Rug Company in Peking China. Then built the Olympus Manor on the canal with a oriental design with grand rooms, guest cottages pipe organs, two native outrigger canoes for his guests and the benefits of 25 years of acquiring all the wood workings , rugs and adornments from Seattle finest mansions that were torn down with the Denney regrade. There was a steady stream of authors, poets and the majority who would become of the northwest finest artists. a frequent guest was Gene Tunney heavyweight boxing champ and the most recognizable person on the planet in in the late 1920's. Then in 1952 the caretaker fell asleep with a cigarette and the manor burnt down. There is a photo with him telling a reporter he lost everything including the only item he had insured . A million dollar rug. He was never the same and moved to Seattle an built a little house above the Chinatown area. One of his greatest achievements occurred after his death. He was voted the greatest and best loved teacher of the past 100 years at Ballard High School. Along with having the Orre Nobles Museum of Art housed in the school named for him.
A few yards from the main house at the manor the was a studio retreat where he hosted plays, offered tea service, gave art lessons there and stored a variety of contents until they were placed in storage in the 1960's and left untouched until my business partner and I bought the contents in the late 1990's. I became an extension of Orre and with these vast amount of stuff became a go between and knowledge base for his family and a surprising amount of his followers. That was a two or three year project. So the story begin with my grandmother bought like crazy and couldn't give it all way. Most of you would cry to see the assortment of collections and amazing things I've sold. It what I did for a living and of course what seemed like great prices at the time. Think about the one item you hope to acquire. I probably sold one. So I am the sell it all guy and not a great feeling looking back.
Now in the middle was my mom. She dropped out of the U of W to marry my dad and wait on all of us tirelessly
and never employed the skills she possessed. But if she had some ting in her hand she would protect it and safely store it eternally. You heard about the dress above. Not sure what this means or matters but I will have a distinction. I possess the very first plate I ever ate and drink from with a locomotive and matching sippy cup with a caboose it the bottom. We at least 71 years and counting I will eat and drink my last meal from the same one I I started. Hoarder no she does keep junk but if I were to need say my 4th grade class photo and detailed grade sheets .Got em. You benefit is the majority of the jewelry her sister and husband didn't steal with be in you jewelry boxes soon. Now I have some family history archived. I hadn't planned it to be at your auction site Juli. lol
