Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic the Gathering, signed in silver in a rare full clean signature, and Christopher Rush (illustrator) signed with extra style in black. The card was verbally confirmed as being signed sometime in the mid-late 90s, making these signatures even more desirable and valuable.

The Power Nine were only printed in Limited Edition Alpha and Beta sets, as well as the Unlimited set, and this artifact can provide a free mana boost for any deck. It is restricted in Vintage and banned in Legacy. Christopher Rush drew its original artwork.

On February 27th, 2019, a "Gem Mint 9.5 grade" Beckett Grading Services graded Alpha Black Lotus was bought on eBay for a record $166,100. On January 27, 2021, a "Gem Mint 10 grade" was sold for $511,100.
