"The Winning Run, How is it, Umpire?" depicts a scene at the end of a baseball game in 1885 between the New York Giants and Chicago. The potential winning run shows Buck Ewing of the Giants sliding head first and touching home plate with his left hand. Chicago's catcher is reaching down for a tag. The home plate umpire is leaning over to get a better look at the tag. The outcome of the game awaits the umpire's decision. The inscription in the lower margin includes the title and: "Game Between the New York Giants and the Chicagos, ‘Buck’ Ewing of Giants, Flint (Catcher for Chicago). At Old Polo Grounds - New York City, Played Aug. 6, 1885". It originally appeared as a woodcut engraving in Harper's Weekly, published August 22, 1885. It was reproduced in this lithograph in 1974. Thure de Thulstrup (1848-1930) was born in Sweden but moved to the US and became a leading American illustrator. He contributed to numerous magazines, including Leslie's and Harper's Weekly. He worked for Harper's for 30 years.
