Richard Gordon Packer (American, 1916-1998): Peonies, 1977. Oil on masonite, signed below, set in original frame.
Richard G. Packer was an accomplished artist from Lynn, Massachusetts. After graduating from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1938, where he studied under prominent artists like sculptor Cyrus Edward Dallin and painter Ernest Lee Major, Packer initially worked in his family's laundry business. However, in his 30s, he transitioned into a full-time art career, establishing his first gallery and art school in Marblehead, Massachusetts. In 1953, Packer opened a studio in North Conway, New Hampshire, where he fully devoted himself to painting. He traveled widely, capturing landscapes in Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, and the American Southwest. His most renowned works feature New England scenes, particularly of the White Mountains, coastal views of Maine and Massachusetts, and depictions of rural life in New Hampshire. Packer remained in North Conway for the rest of his life, focusing on his art until his passing in 1998.
