Howard Besnia was a prolific painter and printsman known for his eclectic oeuvre and his handmade books. Beginning as a cartographer for the United States Army in 1944, he soon became the staff artist for many USO clubs, producing caricatures and portraits of the troops. After subsequent training at the Corcoran School of Art, Clark University and Yale University, Besnia went on to head the art department at Fitchburg State University for decades.
