Phenomenal Old Growth Black Walnut Victorian Architectural Detail and House Parts

In this sale we are offering a remarkable antique treasure tucked away in storage for 50 -70 years. In the 1850's in Connecticut's lower Naugatuck Valley, Ansonia, specifically, a mill town along ...view morethe river, 2 men of great ingenuity built 2 glorious Victorian Mansions. William Wallace, of Wallace and Sons Brass Works and Charles Hill, President of Slade Woolen Company, combined their efforts and hired 3 master craftsmen from Spain, to hand carve architectural detailing for their family homes. The craftsmen hand picked local old growth Black Walnut trees with diameters from 8 - 14 feet. The trees were felled and transported by clipper ship back to Spain, over 3 years they carved the wood and then returned to Connecticut with their apprentices and their masterpieces. The magnificent intricate works of art were salvaged when these homes were demolished in 1940 (Wallace) and 1978 (Hill). The pieces were carefully removed from each of the residences and stored since that time. Some of the wood, particularly the incredible doors, have been restored to their original finish. Wallace's mansion was located on Liberty Street directly across the street from their factory, the third floor housed his innovative research laboratory. The Hill home was on the corner of First Street and North Cliff Street, the home was sold to the Catholic Archdiocese and became the Rectory for Church of The Assumption. We would be remiss if we did not mention that William Wallace was also an inventor and he created the Dynamo and the Telemachon, the first arc lamp, which were precursors to Edison's light bulb. Thomas Edison visited Wallace and Hill in Ansonia many times.
