Details: D.C.A.A./Barrett Art Center has operated with galleries and studios out of the home of its founder, Thomas Weeks Barrett, Jr. (1902-1947), from 1935 until earlier this year. Thomas W. Barrett, Jr. was born in Poughkeepsie in 1902 and graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 1927. After working in New York City as a successful commercial artist, Barrett returned to his family home in Poughkeepsie at the onset of the Great Depression in 1929. He set up an art studio on the 3rd floor where he continued his artistic endeavors as a painter, printmaker, and muralist. In 1934, inspired by President Roosevelt’s WPA Federal Art Project, Barrett founded the Dutchess County Art Association in 1935. Barrett’s sister Betty bequeathed the family’s townhouse to the DCAA in 1974. The home was renovated into galleries and studios that presented art exhibitions and educational programs until early 2022. The D.C.A.A. will continue to perpetuate Barrett’s and Tom’s vision with its recent merging with The Art Effect at the Trolley Barn in Poughkeepsie.
