Born in Woodstock, Illinois, Carl Theodore Linden was the son of Swedish immigrants. He studied at the University of Illinois, Chicago Art Institute and the Chicago ...view moreAcademy of Fine Arts. He was later selected to work at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
During the Depression, he and his wife Barbara (Groves) Linden lived in Majorca, Spain and St. Cirq, France, where Carl painted landscapes.
After returning to the United States, Carl studied anatomy at the University of Illinois where he became a professor of Medical Illustration at the Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He illustrated medical textbooks including Anatomy in Surgery, Diseases of the Esophagus and Diseases of the Mouth by Philip Thorek. He was a member of the Society of Topographic Arts and a charter member of the Association of Medical Illustrators. On Saturdays, he painted cityscapes in the streets of Chicago.
On his retirement, Carl traveled to Mexico, Maine, Alabama and Vermont to record his impression of landscapes in a painterly, realistic style.
His paintings have been exhibited extensively in Illinois, Vermont and New York, including the Chicago Art Institute and the American Watercolor Society. His many awards include a purchase prize, now in a Swedish museum's permanent collection.
Carl Linden painted in watercolor or oils, although he also enjoyed drawing. He was strongly influenced by the work of Robert Henri and the American Ash Can school. He did portraits and figure studies, but he most often chose landscapes as his subject. His final years were spent painting on the Linden farm in Amenia.
