About the Sale
I never met Rosalind Morrissey, though I have gotten a feeling for her having spent a lot of time going through her art and her many beautiful collections. I set up my photography area in her ...view morescreened in porch with the kitchen table as my studio. Working there, I often observed the beauty of Rosalind's amazing garden and I used it as my secondary studio location.
Having been tasked with the job of selling off a large grouping of her artwork, I had to figure out how to accomplish this. What I have tried to do is gather what I could to show her morphosis as an artist, showing her growth through the seasons of time.
I did not want to overwhelm the viewer (bidder) with too many pieces. For this reason, I have held back around 70 unframed watercolors, which will be offered in a future sale.
Here is a brief bio that I found on her:
Rosalind Morrissey was born in the Bronx in 1925. She received a degree in art and art education from Brooklyn College and a master's degree in art education from Columbia University. She also attended the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France.
During World War II, Rosalind, working with the USO, did charcoal portraits of wounded and sick soldiers and sailors at Governors Island and other locations in New York City.
Rosalind was an art teacher in the New York City Schools and taught at Croton-Harmon High School until her retirement in 1999. Since then she was able to spend more time painting in oils and watercolors, and has exhibited her work in many one-woman and group shows throughout the area. She won first place in oil painting at the 2004 annual art exhibition of the Woman's Club of White Plains, second prize at the 2005 Westchester Beaux Arts Finale, and other awards.
Following the tragic death of her son, Evan, in 1969, Rosalind co-founded the Croton Community Blood Program, which has conducted semi-annual blood drives continuously since 1970. The donations collected at these drives helped save many lives over the years.
Rosalind Morrissey passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the age of 91.
From my view, Rosalind had an amazing and giving life I hope that you enjoy observing some of the many images of her beautiful vision!
Good luck bidding!
