Vintage Kuna Mola Hand Sewn Reverse Applique 15.5" x 18.5", In Excellent Condition. Use to Make Clothing, A Pillow Case or Hang in a Frame as a Collectors Item. Kuna mola appliques, also known as molas, are made in Panama by the women of the Kuna indigenous people: Molas are brightly colored, intricately patterned textiles that are traditionally worn as front and back panels of a blouse. The word "mola" comes from the Kuna language and means "cloth" or "shirt". The designs on molas are created using a reverse appliqué technique, which involves stitching together multiple layers of cloth, cutting designs into the layers, and folding them back to show different colors. The designs are inspired by the geometric patterns used in Kuna body painting, as well as realistic and abstract designs of flowers, sea animals, birds, and popular culture. Molas were originally developed in the late 1800s, and are now also sold to collectors and exhibited.
