Very Rare 19th Century Chinese Latticed Pinewood Kitchen Cabinet

Very unique cabinet with old school hand construction. Due to its rather complicated and elaborate construction, it is likely that this piece has undergone extensive repair work.

Purchased at Horsepools Traditional Asian Furniture, Repulse Bay, Hong Kong in 1996 for $1300 US.

The use of pine in cabinet making was a technique favored by Northern Chinese, and with their cooler climate it is not surprising that they should construct what could be regarded as the original refrigerator.
The slats, forming shelves, and the use of lattice work, here enhanced with flower designs, meant that the air could freely circulate keeping the food cool.  It is also said that the bottom section of such a kitchen cabinet would be used for the storage of chickens.  Some of the drawers are stiff to open.
