Item Description

This rare lot includes two separate editions (3 books) of Quarles' prolific Emblems Divine and Moral Together with Hieroglyphics.

The 1676 edition was published in London. Printed for "S. Williams & F. Eglesfeild, and are to be sold at the Crowne in Cross Keeys Court in Little Brittan, and the Marigold in St. Paul’s Church-yard". The title page has antique notations in ink relating to ownership. Spine has decorative gold inlay and is firmly attached despite front and back covers separating from hinges. Binding and pages are also in great condition for their age firmly and intact. Some discoloration and foxing is present throughout.

The 1778 edition is a 2 volume leather bound edition, without a listed publisher or printer, but states being printed for Alex Hog, No. 16, "Pater Noster Row". Volume I includes a preface from C. De Coetlogon and contains Book I through Book V with one sided engravings throughout. Volume II contains Hieroglyphics, The School of the Heart, The Learning of the Heart, with Translations of the Latin in School of the Heart. Note: Both volumes bindings are in good condition and the pages of both are intact with some discoloration and foxing due to age. The five banded spines are intact with some cracks and rubbings. Title labels are affixed, though v II is loose yet still attached.
