Item Description

This bird by Oiva Toikka of Finland is a beautiful work of art. Handblown of colored crystal, it is decorated using a special palette and filigree techniques. Because of the time and artistic talent to produce each one-of-a- kind bird, they retail for hundreds of dollars.

"Legendary Finnish designer Oiva Toikka’s iconic 'Birds by Toikka' first took flight in 1972. Renowned for his quirky, one-of-a-kind art glass, a new bird has joined Iittala’s flock every year since. Birds by Toikka embodies the rich fusion of glassmaking traditions and Toikka’s hands-on-approach with master glassblowers at the Iittala Glass Factory in Finland. Each mouthblown glass bird has his own unique set of characteristics, making them treasured keepsakes for any home, office or wherever birds nest.

The Nuutajarvi glass village was founded in 1793 by Jacob Wilhelm de Pont and Harald Furnhjelm. The location was chosen for the its forest resources, as firing the glass required vast firewood. While many glass factories were popping up around this time, Nuutajarvi still stands out from the others. Why? Because up until its close in 2014, it was the oldest working glass factory in Finland.

Nuutajarvi merged with iittala in 1988, and it is where Oiva Toikka's glass birds were made for forty years. Though production has since moved to iittala's main factory in Finland, the birds are still handcrafted and mouth-blown by iittala's master glass blowers."

This short video shows how the birds are made by Finnish glass blowers:

Here is some info on Oiva Toikka, from Wikipedia:

"Oiva Toikka was born in Viipurin maalaiskunta, the rural municipality surrounding then-Finnish Vyborg, now part of Russia. He grew up in a farm and was influenced by the rich history of the area.

Oiva Toikka was renowned for his designs for glassware for the Finnish design company Iittala. Originally trained in ceramics at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, he took up glass design later in life. Some of his best known works are the Kastehelmi and Flora tableware from the 1960s and the Pioni and Krouvi collections from the 1970s.

Along with his glassware designs, Toikka is best known for his designs for the Iittala "Birds by Toikka" series. From 1972 until his death in 2019, Toikka created over 400 mouth-blown glass birds. Although Toikka originally worked at the Nuutajärvi glassworks in Urjala, his designs are currently produced at the Iittala glass factory in Hämeenlinna.

Toikka enjoyed success, too, in other creative outlets. He worked as a stage and costume designer, generally with Finnish director Lisbeth Landefort, whose autobiography he illustrated. In his later years, he was also associated with productions by the Finnish National Theatre and the Finnish National Opera. He has also occasionally contributed textile designs to the Marimekko collections.

Toikka's awards include the Lunning Prize in 1970, Finnish State Award for Crafts and Design in 1975, Pro Finlandia Medal in 1980, Kaj Franck Design Prize in 1992, Finland Prize in 2000 and Prins Eugen Medal in 2001."
