The Smithsonian Series. Editor-in-chief is Charles Greeley Abbott, D.Sc. Copyright 1949

compiled by different editors. Approx. 8.75" X 5.75", complete in twelve volumes, bound in
red cloth. Color frontispieces, with many black and white plates for illustrations. Each
volume contains long-form sections on relevant topics, not short articles like in an
encyclopedia. Subjects listed on the spines are as follow: "Smithsonian Institution"
(a history of the institution itself), "The Sun and the Welfare of Man", "Minerals from
Earth and Sky", "North American Indians", "Insects: Their Ways and Means of Living",

Reptiles", "Birds and Beasts", "Shelled Creatures, Geological History" (some discoloration
on the back cover of this volume), "Old and New Plant Lore", "Great Inventions".
