Item Description

Printed for J and R Tonson & Draper (1751). Hardcover bound in soft leather, raised banded spines with gilt lettering and decorative detailing. Front and back boards feature outer double gilt borders. Paper edges in red and endpapers are beautifully marbled, as shown. Spine, binding and pages are intact in both volumes.

Volume 1: on spine the title onlay missing, volume number intact with some cracking and chipping. Front board loose but still attached. Owners name in ink on flypaper.

Volume II: on spine the title onlay and volume number are missing with some cracking and chipping. Front board detached. Dark staining to top right corner begins at front right endpaper through page 48. Creases ob bottom of front right endpaper and first two pages. Owners name in ink on flypaper.

Founded in 1713 by Richard Steele, The Guardian was a short lived newspaper published in London with many contributers including Steele, Joseph Addison, Thomas Tickell, Alexander Pope and more, that included essays, letters on ethics, philosphy and satire.
