Here we have a beautiful landscape oil painting with a rocky river, done by Susan Grisell. You can feel the energy of the rushing water of this piece. Plenty of texture on the raised surface, with thick paint application in areas, applied with both brush and palette knife. It was done on some type of smooth panel or board, not canvas. Signed Grisell in the lower left.
Susan Grisell was born in New Milford, Connecticut in 1946 and grew up in Litchfield county, finding inspiration in the natural beauty surrounding her. When she was 13, she stated "I would become an artist." She had a great uncle named Zimmerman who was a sculptor. He tragically fell to his death from scaffolding in a church. She is also a distant cousin to famous American Impressionist William Merritt Chase, who founded the Chase School, which later became Parson's School of Design.
For over 50 years she has worked as a painter in the Impressionist manner, the only vocation she has pursued. New England impressionist artist Bernard Lennon was her friend, teacher and mentor. She studied with him for many years, until his death in 1992. "In my teens I watched him paint - just watched - but that was how I started to learn.", she said. Lennon and Grissell both shunned what was trendy in art and just painted what they wanted.
Susan Grissell's style shows faithfulness to nature, enjoying landscape and still life. Many of her outdoor scenes depict the four seasons in Connecticut, but she also has captured scenes in Europe, Florida and the American West during her travels.
Grisell' paintings have won numerous awards over the years, notably first prize at both the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit in New York City, and the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival in Mystic, Connecticut.
Notes: Please view the numerous, detailed photos for an accurate appraisal of this item's condition. The painting is in good condition, but the gold frame has wear. It has scratches, scrapes and areas where the finish is uneven, and gold paint is worn and chipped off in spots. There is a particular area on the top edge of the frame, (pictured), where a large chunk of the gold is missing. Along the bottom of the frame someone attached a piece of scotch tape. That caused the gold leaf to pull up off of the surface, so if you remove that piece of tape, it looks like the gold under the tape is going to come up along with it.
Very Good
The wooden frame measures 23.25 by 17.25, and has a 2 thickness. The board itself is 18 by 12."
