A top-tier example in excellent condition, dating to the MEIJI period, circa 1890-1910. It was carved by a master, signed in red cinnabar placard on the lower-back of his tunic. The level of detail is impressive, from the drape of his clothing to the tobacco pouch sinched to his belt, the whisk of long beard in one hand and gnarled wood staff in the other. Even the bottom of his shoes are finely carved, a show of the high quality of the carving. Not a netsuke, but a larger figure/statue [okimono]. Condition is excellent, with NO wear or damage, amazing for a 100+ year old sculpture. One of the best in a lifelong collection.
