A fantastic antique Japanese okimono, artist signed and from the Tokyo School, created around 1890. It is in excellent condition, with no damage. Stands an impressive 7.75" in height, a large sculpture. It is a finely realized villager, carrying a bundle of wood. The sculpt is quite expressive, from his jovial face and layered head wrapping, to the drape of his clothing, musculature in his forearms, and tobacco pouch tethered to his obi. It has a clear Kanji on the underside [signature], as well as a stylized carved bee on the peg that affixes the sculpture to the base. A spectacular late 19th century Meiji Period okimono.
