What a gorgeous water pitcher! Fluted decanter with a slightly pinched back leans a bit forward and is balanced by its hollow glass handle. A stunning showpiece or use as functional art.
The distinctive and fun Gluck jug is designed by Kati Tuominen-Niittylä in 1993 for Iittala. The striped pattern and playful shape of the colored glass jug create beautiful reflections and bring joy to the table. The Gluck jug was in production until the year 2000.
Kati Tuominen-Niittylä (b. 1947) graduated from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki in 1976. She started working for Arabia in 1980. Her minimalistic and timeless design is visible in many of her products which have ended up in serial production but also in her unique work. Tuominen-Niittylä has received amongst others the Grand Prix in Mino in 1998 and won a gold medal in 2002.
Functionality and enduring design are in the core of the design philosophy of the Finnish glassware company Iiittala. Founded in 1881, Iittala started as a glass manufacturer, and today, glass and art glass are still an essential part of its heritage. Perhaps the most famous singular object of Finnish design, the Aalto vase, was designed for Iittala in 1936 by Alvar Aalto.
