it is a superb example, a rare Victorian Era solid COIN SILVER [90% pure, close to sterling] FIGURAL wax seal of a winged putti/cherub. It dates to circa 1870+/-, and is in a wonderful state of preservation. The cherub is set atop an ornate plinth, and the underside is monogrammed. Its' purpose was to imprint a monongram on the hot wax dropped onto an envelope, both a calling card from the sender and a means of protecting the letter or contents from being opened or tampered with. Whereas most Victorian wax seals are simple, this is a STUNNING sculptural example, likely from someone of means. It is marked '900' on the base, visible in the last photo. It is SOLID silver, not plated or filled.
