Planter's Peanut Jars are popular General Store advertising collectibles of the early 20th century, and originals are highly coveted and sought after. This one is not one of those, as they never came in colors besides clear, but as far as the reproduction jars go this is the very best you will find.
The copies date back to the 1980's or so, and actually come in a few colors including sort of a pink, a clear, cobalt, etc. This one is well above the average. The rich color variation throughout the body of the jar is exceptional ranging from a vivid sapphire to a nice rich cobalt, filled with little bubbles, stretch marks, waves & whittle to the glass. The embossing is strong, the details are quite good all the little crosshatching on the peanut bodies of Mr. Peanut is distinct as is the cane in his hand, etc.... The lettering on the jar is strong, not weakly embossed, and all the ribbing on the peanut finial on the lid is equally as good. They worked these molds heavily when they were made and later examples can be rather weakly embossed and poorly defined as the molds wore themselves out, but not this one.
This jar has a mold defect on the underside of a side panel near the foot of the jar, a small "pull" of glass that occurred when being removed from the mold, either an impurity got into the batch causing the extra adhesion, or a defect was starting to appear in the iron mold itself, allowing some molten glass to seep into it, and it stuck as they removed the jar from the mold, thus causing it to shear. This is in-making, not a post manufacture chip or other damage and has been there since time of manufacture, much the same as the strange cut marks on the inside rim of the lid, as if it was set on some sort of wire rack to anneal in the ovens and it caused the indents on the lid rim edge.
Jar stands 12" to top of the peanut finial, exceptionally vibrant coloring and crudity, if you've been looking for one of these, this is the one to own. Set up atop some kitchen cabinets, with a light behind it, or in front of a well lit window and it will glow like a beacon!
