Item Description

When the design for the 30 stamp in the 1869 pictorial series was being considered, high officials in the United States Post Office and other government agencies wanted to use John Trumbull's painting, "Surrender of Saratoga." As the story goes, however, this design was not adopted for fear it might prove offensive to Great Britain. The motif that was finally adopted was thought to reflect a truly patriotic spirit, especially in light of the fact that the stamp's colors were red, white and blue.
