Spectacular and very large signed limited suite of 12 hand-colored original Salvador Dalí drypoint etchings for La Fontaine’s Fables, one of a total edition of 682, each etching signed and numbered by Dalí, including the famous “Le Corbeau et le Renard,” “Le Cheval et le Loup,” and “Le Coche et le Mouche.” With publisher’s packet of certificates of authenticity for each original etching.

DALÍ, Salvador. Le Bestiaire de La Fontaine Dalinise. [Paris]: Robert Mouret, [1974, i.e. 1977]. Elephant folio (24 by 31 inches), original blue cloth portfolio gilt, silk ties, containing 12 original signed etchings.

“The origins of La Fontaine’s fables trace to ancient sources, including those attributed to the legendary Greek slave Aesop, the Roman writer Phaedrus and the Indian storyteller Bidpai. La Fontaine altered aspects of the tales, elevating them from simplistic prose to sophisticated poetic verses. And he deftly reshaped some stories into political commentaries or social satires on the court of Louis XIV” (Rita Reif). In this amazing collection of Salvador Dalí illustrations for 12 of La Fontaine’s fables, “Dalí adapted his artistic style to the moral and edifying tone of La Fontaine, and allowed his art to become limpid, transparent and crisp. The delicate coloring of the illustrations charges the world of dreams and fantasy with new life, through the workings of Dalís surrealistic imagination” (Robert Whitaker). Picasso once referred to Dalí as “an outboard motor that’s always running”— an energy that is evident here. Etched in drypoint, each of these monumental original prints is hand-colored en pochoir and signed and numbered by Dalí in pencil. The portfolio also includes a list of the titles of the etchings and a title page, numbered and signed by both the publisher Robert Mouret and Maitre Bilger, official approver for its publication in France.
