Rosa Inermis By Pierre-Joseph Redoute

Before photography became a thing, illustrations of plants, flowers were the only way of recording, identifying the various kinds of plant species in the world. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, Maria Sibylla Merian, Annie Pratt are some of the most prolific botanical artists of the past.

Pierre-Joseph Redoute (10 July 1759 – 19 June 1840), was a painter and botanist from Belgium, known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers at Malmaison, many of which were published as large, color stipple engravings. He was nicknamed "the Raphael of flowers" and has been called the greatest botanical illustrator of all time. In 1985, 468 leaves were bought at a New York auction by an art dealer for approximately $5.5 million dollars and then dispersed.

This lot comes with two (2) pieces of artwork. Both frames have scratches and chips. The back of the frames have stains and rips on the backing paper.
