Pierre August-Renoir is one of the great impressionist artists. By the Seashore is also thought to have been painted in the artist's Paris studio after his trip to Guernsey. The beach depicted here is possibly inspired by, but not actually, a view of the Channel Islands. It is generally thought to be a beach near Dieppe, on the coast of Normandy.
