Item Description

FIRST EDITION. The Picturesque: Studies in a Point of View by Christopher Hussey, published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, printed in London. 249 pages, plus appendixes and index. Beautiful marbled clothbound hardcover with top edge gilt. Spine has gilt lettering on black paper overlay. Illustrated throughout with black and white reproductions of pieces by Claude Lorraine, Niccolo Poussin, Thomas Girtin, and more. Original dust jacket found folded inside front cover is present but in frail condition as shown. Spine, binding and deckled edge pages intact. Slight discoloration found in endpapers. No foxing or water damage.

A first edition copy of this comprehensive study of the Picturesque, an influential work on English garden history. Christopher Hussey (1899-1970) was one of the eminent authorities on British domestic architecture of his generation.
