Item Description

Full title "The Germ : Thoughts towards Nature in Poetry, Literature, and Art". One of only 450 printed in 1898 on Van Gelder hand-made paper by private press publisher Thomas B. Mosher, of Portland, Maine. Unusual original binding of plain boards and unconvered spine has original cream colored wrapper with a lovely light green decorative border and lettering in black and red. Wrapper's spine is discolored from age and there is a full split of wrapper inbetween spine and front cover. Binding and pages intact - slight discoloration on deckled edges.

Content was originally issued as a periodical in four issues in 1850. Edited by William Michael Rossetti, "The Germ" contains poetry, essays, and art by members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and their circle. Contains contributions from Rossetti's brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christina Rossetti (under the pseudonym Ellen Alleyn), John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, James Collison, Thomas Woolner, and others.
