Full set of first editions of The Yellow Book: an Illustrated Quarterly, running from April, 1894 through April, 1897. Aubrey Beardsley as art editor and illustrator, published by Ballantyne Press, London for Elkin Mathews & John Lane (London) and Copeland & Day (Boston).
This is a complete run of the most important and notorious British "magazine" of the 1890s. Considered a journal of art and literature, they contain a wide variety of short stories, poetry, artwork and other artistic and literary works. Contributors included Henry James, H.G. Wells, Edmund Gosse, Kenneth Grahame, William Butler Yeats, Ella D'Arcy and many more. This series contains a vast variety of short stories, poetry, artwork and other artistic and literary works. For the time period, the series was innovative in style, format, and content, especially in its separation of art and literature, support of new artists and writers. It is believed the series titled was derived from the illicit French novels of the time which often openly dealt with sexual content wrapped in yellow paper alerted readers to their lascivious content. This set has yellow board covers with black blocking. Black and white Illustrations have tissue overlays. Table of contents are listed on the first 12 volumes and v13 has a mirror image on front and back covers.
Overall this handsome set appears in great condition for their age. Spines are intact but have darkened with age, no loose papers but edges have darkened with age, some with slight discolorations and random age spotting/foxing, and the covers show some scuffing. A couple volumes have extremely minor worm holes (i.e. singular to three pinhole sized). Other condition notes: v I: Lead pencil markings inside front cover; v II: slight spacing of binding in places; v IV: spine slightly bent on bottom, one tissue overlay torn; v VII: minor binding separation page 219; v VII: three to four pinhole sized wormholes with discoloration and a singular trailed worm hole on first 50 pages outside text margins on bottom; v X: binding paper split at table of contents but intact.
Notes: Please see photos for details & condition. Photos are considered part of the description. Sold as is.
