Item Description

This is a unique, antique find! Early edition of The Analysis of Beauty by William Hogarth. First printed page adds ": and Rules for Drawing Charicaturas: with an Essay on Comic Painting, by Francis Grose, Esq F.R.S and A.S. The title page includes "with a View of Fixing the Fluctuating Ideas of Taste by William Hogarth, Variety, London: Printed for Samuel Bagster, In the Strand." This book was printed by Mercier and Co. Printers. King's Head Court, St. Paul's Church-yard, contains 220 pages plus preface and numerous illustrations throughout. Undated - assumed to be early 1800's.

This beautiful book is tight back bound in green leather, front endpapers have handwritten in ink "W. Habershon May 1929" and "Isabella Habershon March 1849". The spine is likely gilded leather with beautiful detailing. Front and back covers are a mottled indigo blue, with delicate tooled detailing running parallel to the spine and on the corners. The paper itself is pulpous to the touch.

Based on the assumed age, this book appears to be in very good condition. Binding is intact, slight wear on corners and side of spine from age. Front end paper page is loose at binding. First page has a small rectangle cut out. Some pages have some staining from age.
